The Rabaçal 25 Fontes walk is very beautiful for its diversity of plants and green vegetation that we can see, also the famous Levadas of the Madeira Island. Levadas are water channels, and this is one of the most famous of the whole island, because the landscapes and unforgettable sensations will stay in the thoughts of those who do this levada. Starting from Rabaçal, you will find an immense variety of species of flora and fauna madeirenses. The walk through the middle of the Laurissilva forest, through the irrigation canals that reach the lagoon from the 25 Fontes, it is the most beautiful point of the whole walk, with a large waterfall falling into a small lagoon. Transfer to Caldeirão Verde Levada Self-Guided Hike Queimadas


Hike at your own rhythm on a self-guided trek in Caldeirão Verde. Explore the incredible Laurissilva Forest and mystical trail along a water channel, with green views on one side and stunning waterfalls along the other. Observe the waterfalls, ancient endemic trees, the Levada trail, and feel the nature of Queimadas. Get picked up at your accommodation with a shared transfer (up to 8 guests per van). Arrive at your destination and receive your hike instructions with scheduling and map explanation. The hike is a round trip trail totalling 15 km in length. The starting point will be at Queimadas Park. The ending point will be at the end of PR JOEL trail (um Caminho para todos trail) for another 1.9km (20/25 minutes). This hike will take you roughly 5.5-hours to complete. The minimum elevation on this tour is 872-meters whereas the maximum is 1062-meters, so it's not known for hills or stairs. However, you will encounter 4 tunells with a max lengh of 200 metres.


Levada da Referta – Castelejo


Taking place in the small village of Porto da Cruz you can admire various crop plantation and study the locals way of living. The fields and their unique shapes make you wonder at how the agriculture is cleverly done.


Private hike along the Levada


Hiking along the Levada, an abandoned water line, propels you into a completely different world. As if you were in the setting of Jurassic Park, just the Dinos are missing. The hike along the Levada can also be done if the weather is not perfect. The hike along the Levada is physically easy, but be ready to encounter some wet passages and pass through a short, but dark tunnel. The hike takes about 3 to 4 hours, due to the nature of the trail, the way back will be on the same route.


Levada Walk from Ribeiro Frio to Portela

The King's Levada – Levada do Rei


The first part of the trail crosses a forested area where some specimens of indigenous vegetation are found here and there. This initial leg of the trail presents travellers with beautiful panoramic views of the São Jorge and Santana farmlands. After the midway point of the trail, the levada that winds from the interior of the island along the mountain slopes passes through a spectacular area of native forest which is well developed and rich in natural biodiversity. The path ends at Ribeiro Bonito, where you are aware of feeling you are in a true sanctuary of nature. This is one of the areas of the Laurisilva forest – World Nature Heritage of UNESCO since 1999, where the genuinely Madeiran vegetation reaches its highest expression and its location and isolation leave one with the sensation of having gone back in time to the discovery of the island.


Madeira Lakes – Levada do Alecrim


This wonderful walk begins about 200 meters above Rabaçal´s shelter. Along the path, the Erica arborea and the whortleberry species are predominant. However, as it is a transitional area between the heath and the Laurel Forest, classified as Natural World Heritage by UNESCO since December 1999, you may find other species such as the laurel, the holly, the lily-of-the-valley tree, the pau-branco and the Heberdenia. The Lagoa do Vento is a river basin formed by the water which fall from the top of the cliff, coming from the Ribeira do Lajeado and moving towards the waterfall (or cascade) of Risco. Enjoy this magical and inspiring place, where the silence is only interrupted by the sound of the water, to recharge your energy to return.
