We will be hiking up Lions Head, Cape Town's most Instragram'able hike. We plan to either catch the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean or sunrise from the Hottentots Holland mountains. We enjoy some amazing photo opportunities before our descent. During a sunset hike, we descend in the dark using our flashlights (provided). During a sunrise hike, we may hike the first part in the dark using our flashlights (provided). While the hike is regarded as easier than Table Mountain, it still involves steep rocky and narrow terrain at certain points from about half up way and a section where the use of steel handles and chains need to be used to get up 2 pitches of about 3 meters each (only up and not down). Lion's Head hike is a tour which we recommend to those looking for the best scenic views of Cape Town. The aerial views on Lion's Head are better than those you get while hiking Table Mountain or on other routes. The trail going up Lion’s head is a screw top trail you’ll be circling the mountain getting to the top. At one point the path gives way to rough ground you have to step up using your hands to scramble over rocks. You will then continue steeply upwards to the first ladder, before traversing along a shelf with a chain handrail. Next, you will reach a fork, where you will have the choices to either veer left to circumnavigate two rock pitches or to turn right and climb the rock pitches. If you are not into vertical rock steps continue left, past some huge pine trees to gain the crest of the southeast ridge. At the summit of Lion's Head one has a 360 degree view it is one of the three iconic peaks that frame the city of Cape Town. It has Table Mountain as its backdrop and it is situated in the smallest and richest floral kingdoms in the world. Then little by little, the city lights will turn on or off offering a new sight.
