Discover Etna and the Alcantara Gorges! The perfect mix of adventure and refreshing relax! The excursion begins by SUV or minivan (up to 8 people), together with our experienced guides. Our first stop is an off-road trip to the 2002 eruption lava fron. Continuing along the Via Mareneve, in the middle of the Ragabo pine forest, we will arrive at the starting point of our trekking to the Monti Sartorius craters. We will continue on foot, starting at 1650 metres and arriving at an altitude of 1750 metres, an easy walk suitable for everyone. We will then explore a lava flow cave, the Grotta dei Ladroni, equipped with helmets and torches. We will stop at a local chalet or restaurant for lunch (included in the price: a first course, drink and coffee). After lunch, we will reach the characteristic Alcantara Gorges, also known as the Larderia Gorges. A refreshing and relaxing visit to a wonderful place. You can cool off in the Alcantara river in the middle of the canyon of the Gorges!

The tour to the craters of 2002 is one of the most sought after destinations and chosen by tourists on the northern side of Etna, far from the large mass of visitors. Departures planned from Piano Provenzana with off-road vehicles along the panoramic path that leads up to the north side of Mt. Etna, through ancient craters and recent lava flows up to 2825 mt. Then we start the ascent (470mt positive level difference) on foot on a path surrounded by volcanic bombs and scoria, till we will reach the Central Crater at a height of 3300 mt, where we will stop to admire the greatness,the uniqueness and the processes of this extraordinary volcanic environment, combined with the spectacle of the panorama that can be enjoyed from the roof of Sicily (the visibility might change according to weather or volcanic conditions). The descent goes back along the same path, while the last part will be made inside little channels constituted by soft and friable volcanic scoria, on which you can walk easily without any problem adopting the necessary precautions, till a height of 2825 mt where we will get the off road vehicles for the trip back down to Piano Provenzana.

The route is a valid alternative to the top craters, and is among the most complete and fascinating that can be offered on the volcano, suitable for those who want to walk among craters, fractures in the ground, lava flows and visit exceptional volcanic supply ducts, where a time the molten magmatic mass boiled.The trekking of great volcanological interest, involves the ascent on special 4×4 vehicles from an altitude of 1800 meters to an altitude of 2800 meters (for a total of 8 km of road) accompanied by your volcanological guide who will begin the explanations on board.During the journey you will visit the fracture called (Rift) of the north side of Etna, you will enter with your protective helmets inside the chimney of a perfectly intact volcanic cone, you will visit the mouths that have produced the lava flows. The excursion will continue, on the edge of large craters, through descents composed of slopes of volcanic ash, among the craters generated by innumerable lateral eruptions.

First stop: Monti Sartorius or the craters formed in 2002 on the north-east side of Etna), our naturalistic guide will introduce you to the fascinating world of volcanic phenomena. Second stage: You will explore a cave of volcanic origin (for example the "Grotta dei Ladroni" or the "Grotta Cassone") equipped with the necessary equipment (helmets and torches). During the winter the visit to the cave is not carried out in the event of significant snowfall or ice at the entrance which would make entry dangerous. Third stage: If weather conditions permit, you will be able to make a typical Sicilian snack based on 'hot table'. Otherwise, lunch will take place indoors at a lovely mountain farm. The 2002 eruption was among the most impressive and devastating in recent years. The route allows you to discover and study the many volcanic morphologies, related to the eruptions that followed one another on the northern slope of Etna. It will also be possible to visit the eruptions on the side of 10 September 1911 and 17 June 1923 which threatened the town of Linguaglossa. You will climb along the pyroclastic cones of the 2002 eruption until you reach the maximum altitude of 2100 meters. Once on the 2100 meter Crater it will begin the descent into a sandy channel that will lead us back to the starting point of Piano Provenzana. During the trip, approximately one-hour drive, the guide will entertain you with an in-depth historical-geological and volcanological explanation of Etna and you will see different types of vegetation such as: citrus groves, vineyards, chestnut groves and pine forests. Arrival at Piano Provenzana (North side – 1900 meters) . You will have approximately three hours available in which you can explore the surroundings independently with a soft trek. Possibility of reaching the maximum altitude allowed by the relevant authorities in the summit area, currently set at 2.900 meters, which can be reached by 4×4 minibus. Starting from Piano Provenzana 1800masl (Etna Nord), the unique slope that currently allows the climb to the summit in safe conditions, with special 4×4 we will arrive to 2825masl (Piano delle Concazze.) From here begins the ascent of about 2h to the main crater rim at an altitude of 3.320masl. You will walk on the edge of the Central Crater, Northeast Crater and we will admire the famous Southeast Crater, author of the most recent and impressive eruptions. You will surrounded by a unique volcanic environment, with gas emissions, volcanic bombs, and the sparkling colors of the ground due to the sublimation of various elements, including sulfur in particular. After the visit at the top, the panoramic path of descent characterized by fine volcanic ash and scorie, will give us a unforgettable view of Sicily coast During the hike the guide will explain the history, the formation and the peculiarities of the volcano. Once again at 2825masl, with the 4×4 we will return to Piano Provenzana

From a naturalistic point of view, it is the most exciting tour as we will cross the small and typical municipalities of the area such as Calatabiano, Castiglione di Sicilia and Linguaglossa to reach Piano Provenzana. Upon returning, our journey will continue to reach the Alcantara Gorges: a lava canyon crossed by icy waters. Here there will be the opportunity to taste typical local products inside the botanical and geological park and use an elevator to reach the canyon.

WE WILL TAKE YOU OUT OF THE TOURIST ROUTES !! Surrounded by a landscape, sometimes lunar, we will try to know and explore Etna, a World Heritage Site, famous for its beauty and uniqueness. The route in case of adverse weather conditions or real safety risks can be changed!! Other things to keep in mind:The duration of the experience is indicative. Unpredictable situations could cause the experience to end later than expected. It is always better not to make the day of the experience coincide with the date of your flight, if the scheduled time is too close to your departure / arrival. (It is important to wear trekking shoes or that you are not afraid of getting dirty)

The first stop will be at the ruins of the hotel “Le Betulle” , the only structure visible among those destroyed by the lava flow on October 27, 2002. Continue in the direction of the extinct craters “Umberto and Margherita”, located at an altitude of 2,380 meters for a simple trek.Then you reach the volcanological observatory and left the off-road vehicle begins a short trek to the top of the promontory of Pizzi Deneri at an altitude of 3000 meters about.2.850 meters where, weather conditions permitting, you can admire . The excursion starts from Etna Nord – tourist station of Piano Provenzana qt. 1,800 meters and continues along the scenic road that, between ancient craters and recent lava flows, will allow us to reach qt. First to the ruins of the hotel "Le Betulle", the only structure visible among those destroyed by the lava flow of 2002. Next stage an easy trek to the characteristic button craters of the eruption of 27 October 2002. From qt. 2,050 mt. about it will be possible to see the lava flow that destroyed Piano Provenzana. Return to the vehicles, stop at qt. 2.380 mt. to the large extinct craters "Umberto and Margherita" for a short trek. Next step arrival by 4×4 bus to the Volcanological Observatory, from here short trek to the top of the promontory of Pizzi Deneri qt. 3,000 meters. where, in absolute safety, we will be dominated by the Summit Craters. From the volcanological observatory you will wait for sunset and then return to Piano Provenzana.

Start your excursion in Piano Provenzana, on the north side of Etna. Board a comfortable 4×4 bus and follow the unpaved road that climbs the volcano to the Pizzi Deneri Astrophysical Observatory, located at 2810 m. Enjoy the view of ancient craters and beautiful views stretching to the sea. Once you reach 2805m, make a short trek up to 2865m altitude (depending on the activity of the volcano). From this vantage point you can admire the beautiful Valle del Bove below the northeast crater. Learn about the volcano with your volcanology guide while admiring the panoramic view of the Sicilian coast. Then you will get back on the bus and get off at 2200m. After a short trek of about 20 minutes, you will reach the rim of the crater from the 2002 eruption. At the end of the tour, take the 4×4 bus and return to Piano Provenzana.
