Lake Duluti

The tour begins with a two-hour canoe trip around Lake Duluti. Guests will enjoy views of Mounts Meru and Kilimanjaro when on the water (weather permitting) and learn about the flora and fauna found at the lake as well as the surrounding forest. We will then cycle from the lake to Mangalia Waterfalls (3-5 hours total) where they can enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool mountain water. Along the way we pass through coffee farms and visit a small home-brewery where traditional banana beer is prepared. This experience of Tanzanian life and culture ends with lunch at a small restaurant where we have a typical local meal.

On the Lake Duluti Day trip we will explore Lake Duluti; an old crater that became a lake. The lake is incredibly deep. They say its more than 700m deep, but it’s unconfirmed till this day. Lake Duluti is beautifully located between the green, lush forests and lends itself for a great deal of activities. From here you’ll have views on Mt. Meru and sometimes even Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is a paradise for reptiles and birds. Monitor lizards can be seen sunbathing on the edge of the lake and a great variety of birds have made their homes here. Kilimanjaro ⛰ but collapsed and is now a crater lake, diving as deep as 700 kilometers at the center. During our canoe ride we learned that Lake Duluti inhabits a plethora of birds and blue monkeys who live and swing through and live in the canopies. The sounds of the lake are of those that are almost completely foreign to the ears of a city boy. And simply to have two working eyes could easily become the greatest gift in the world..

Come and experience Tanzanian culture outside of your safari! Together, we will visit Mama Max, an incredible woman who has fought her way out of severe poverty, through business training and microfinance provided by a community nonprofit, The Small Things. First you'll get a quick overview of our work empowering children, families, and communities at Happy Family Children's Village, although, for child protection, you should not expect direct contact with children. Next, we will walk or drive to Mama Max's house (depending on what you would prefer), while I tell you about how our business development program helps families like hers to keep children at home. When we arrive, we will share traditional chai tea and locally grown coffee. If you like, help cut vegetation for the animals, check the chicken's nests for eggs, and milk the cow. You'll come away with a deeper appreciation of the strength of women like Mama Max who have climbed out of poverty.

The tour begins with a one-hour trip to a somewhat unlikely site, a Polish cemetery. Visitors will learn about the little known history of some 5,000 refugees who arrived in Tanzania after fleeing Europe during WW2. We then proceed to Mangalia Waterfalls where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool waters that flow down from Mount Meru. On the way back down we will have a closer look at Tanzanian culture by exploring three villages, Akheri, Patandi and Mavinuni. This is followed by a short stop at Lake Duluti, where we will enjoy a drink and the lake view for 20 minutes before returning to the meeting point. Clients may arrange with us for additional activities at the lake (canoeing, sport fishing etc.) if they so wish.

Arusha National Park is the closest national park to Arusha town covering an area of 137 sq. km and is about 60kms from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The Park has a wide range of habitats, from the string of crater lakes where many water birds can be watched, through the highland montane forest and on up to the imposing summit of Mt. Meru. The interesting geology of the area is reflected in the impressive view of the ash cone and cliff face leading to the summit of Mt. Meru.

Lake Duluti is a small crater lake with mavelous view sorounded by the forest. It is the home of more than 150 bird spiecies, monitor lizards and other reptiles. There will be nature walk, bird watching and canoeing. The event will have two starting points which are Moshi and Arusha.
