A magnificent half day walk along 5.5Km of the levada of Serra do Faial which is over one hundred years old.

The Rabaçal 25 Fontes walk is very beautiful for its diversity of plants and green vegetation that we can see, also the famous Levadas of the Madeira Island. Levadas are water channels, and this is one of the most famous of the whole island, because the landscapes and unforgettable sensations will stay in the thoughts of those who do this levada. Starting from Rabaçal, you will find an immense variety of species of flora and fauna madeirenses. The walk through the middle of the Laurissilva forest, through the irrigation canals that reach the lagoon from the 25 Fontes, it is the most beautiful point of the whole walk, with a large waterfall falling into a small lagoon. The Valley of Rabaçal is one mother nature's greatest masterpieces. Descending from the plateau of Paul da Serra, we arrive at the Rabaçal guesthouse and from there we walk to the Risco waterfall. We then continue downwards towards the levada das 25 Fontes until reaching a small lake. This lake is located at the bottom of a cliff from where 25 natural springs cascade into the small lake. We shall return through a different path passing through a tunnel that carries water to the south side of the island.

Rabaçal is an unique and magical place full of waterfalls and fountains. This levada walk is the most famous and beautiful in Madeira. This experience will start with about 3 hours walk including 800 mts through a volcanic rock tunnel leading us to an evergreen forest providing beautiful landscapes. On this hike, we will have the opportunity to admire beautiful waterfalls, natural spring water and its endemic species of fauna and flora. After this great walk, we will have a lunch break (not included) in a Madeiran restaurant at Paúl da Serra, the biggest plateau of the island about 1400 mts high with stunning views. Later, we go downhill through a fantastic off-road expedition, where you will enjoy the fragrance of the exotic eucalyptus forest. Continuing, we go to Cabo Girão with the highest sea cliff of Europe at 580 mts, known by its suspended glass floor viewpoint which offers a spectacular panoramic view over the Atlantic Ocean and Câmara de Lobos Bay. Lace up your sports shoes and get ready to enjoy an 8-hour guided walk along the best-known 'levada,' (irigation channel) on the island of Madeira, from Ribeiro Frio to Portela. In a small group of no more than 15 people, marvel at the flora and fauna and admire the sweeping views toward Porto da Cruz and Penha d'Aguia, along the way.

The levada walk will allow hikers to enjoy the evergreen and luxuriant Rabacal valley situated within the natural park of Madeira, in the North West of the island and discover the concealed treasures of the indigenous Laurisilva forest with its abundance of mosses, lichens and ferns. As you stroll along the levada to Risco and the 25 fountains, the cascading waterfalls will seem to be singing fountains and the tiny translucent lakes will enchant you.

A walk along some of the most remote places of the island is highly recommended. We shall walk through a waterfall and go through some small tunnels and then arrive at the incredible waterfall of Caldeirão Verde.

Beginning in the Queimadas Forestry Park, this walk is ‘out-and-back’, and crosses some spectacularly steep slopes, but is one of the finest ways of penetrating the deep valley of the São Jorge brook on foot; you’ll need a torch on this walk, which passes through a tunnel. The levada of Caldeirão Verde is an impressive work of art built in the 18th century that begins in the main stream bed of the Caldeirão Verde brook. Passing through steep cliffs and mountains, it carries the water that runs off the highest mountains of Madeira, to be used to irrigate the farm lands of the parish of Faial. After you pass through the 4 tunnels on the route, Caldeirão Verde appears on the left of the levada. The Caldeirão Verde lake is formed by water that falls from the bed of the Caldeirão Verde stream bed from a height of approximately 100m.

The Levada Rabaçal begins in Paul da Serra, more precisely in Rabaçal. From this point we can observe one of the most beautiful valleys of Madeira, the Rabaçal Valley and down to the Forest House of Rabaçal. We operate in full Laurissilva Forest, a World Heritage site. After a few meters of pure beauty we make our first visit to the stunning waterfall of Risco. After a break in the Risco balcony we follow our path. All around you can be dazzled by the green beauty of the forest and the sound of nature, the natural heart of Madeira Island. We can enjoy a variety of plant species, to highlight the Tree Heather, Besom Heath and Madeira Bilberry. Among many species of birds, hopefully we can find the Trocaz Pigeon a unique species of Madeira. In the end we find the 25 Fontes and its beautiful green and fresh lagoon, surrounded by vines and giant ferns.

This is an easy hike and quite pleasant! The scenery is breathtaking and completely different from any other area in Madeira.
