This amazing hike on the Pipeline Trail goes into remote virgin cloud forest surrounding the perimeter of Volcán Barú National Park. The trail parallels a gorgeous creek that meanders through the valley in the highlands. The Pipeline Trail is the best maintained, and features old growth trees, butterflies, and rare species such as the Resplendent Quetzal, sloths, and monkeys. There are more than 220 bird species native to the area, including the elusive Resplendent Quetzal. We pride ourselves on being a highly ethical elephant sanctuary. Our elephants have been rescued from unethical parks and attractions where they have been chained, caged and ridden. Here we provide our elephants with the love and care they need, maintaining and sustaining peaceful, respectful interactions between humans and animals. We allow our elephants to roam freely in our park and we stand firmly against the use of cages, chains and elephant riding. Our establishment is owned and managed by the Karen Hill Tribe and our Karen guides and Mahouts (Elephant keepers) provide insightful understandings into the park, the elephants and local history.

Mai Chau doesn't have a tourist service per se, and surprisingly few of the locals speak enough English to offer any advice or services, so if you want to make the most of the trekking opportunities in the area your best bet is to book a tour from Hanoi. Tours range from one day — a long day — to longer treks covering Pu Luong Nature Reserve. We've heard good things about operators such as Mai Chau Trek and Mai Chau Tours but have yet to try them out ourselves.
