Hi, my name is Julia; I am an art historian and also one of the official guide at the Tate Modern. I previously worked as a Collection Research Assistant at the Tate and I am now hosting one of the most successful Art Experiences in London. It is not uncommon to feel both intrigued and confused by a piece of contemporary art. Allow me to guide you through the galleries of Tate Modern on a curious inquiry into what we see and hopefully, during the 2 hours that we spend together, you will acquire the skills of looking, seeing and talking about art. At Tate Modern, we will look at some fabulous art from a fresh angle and try to experience it on a more personal level without any preconceived ideas. Ask questions! Get excited! Let's talk about art in a way where no answer is too big, or too small, or too right, or too wrong. All ages are welcome, no specific knowledge of art is required.

Explore the back streets for urban art & discover how ceramic art transformed the area into the city's coolest district. We cast a critical eye & learn about issues facing the city from social justice to public spaces, and look at the ethics behind public art itself. The tour tracks the transformation of the Northern Quarter since the 1970s when it was in decline in the wake of our first American-style shopping mall, the Arndale Centre, opening. The area, the one with the highest density of protected buildings in the city, was cited by cultural icon Tony Wilson in the 90s as being 'our Detroit' owing to a mass evacuation of businesses. It was art that turned the area around from 1998 onwards. The tour discovers the original ceramic art trail & uses more modern street art in order to weave together the narrative. The Museum of Modern Art – or MAM, as locals like to call it – is an architecture landmark. It is a project conceived by Roberto Burle Marx and made by architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy.
