Mount Meru has been labelled ‘Kilimanjaro’s little brother’ due to the fact that it is the second highest mountain in Tanzania. The four day hike allows you to analyse the scenic landscapes in a leisurely manner but Mount Meru trekking will challenge your body’s limits. The climb to the summit doesn’t require an athlete or an extreme alpinist but you should be in relatively good shape. The elevated viewpoint of the Arusha National Park allows you to discover the beauty that lies in the savannah plains featuring bursts of colourful vegetation and the scattered wildlife. The towering Mount Kilimanjaro can be spotted in the distance of the landscape. Tranquil hikes through the luscious canopies and the narrow trails enclosing the U shaped crater provide you with the perfect opportunity to clear your mind. Reaching the summit is an experience you are unlikely to forget

At 4,566 m Mt Meru is the fifth highest mountain on the African continent and the second highest in Tanzania. About 250,000 years ago, a massive volcanic eruption blew away the entire eastern flank of the mountain and left it with the distinctive appearance it has today. The Mt Meru ascent passes through many different vegetation zones. The dry forest of the lower region changes to a dense mountain rainforest, which then turns into scrubland. Closer to the summit, vegetation becomes less and less and gives way to alpine terrain. As the vegetation changes so does the wildlife. During the ascent, you might come across large game such as giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, colobus monkeys and antelopes. To be safe, it is obligatory to be accompanied by an armed park ranger on your tour.

Mount Meru, situated east of the Great Rift Valley and about 40 km southwest of Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania's Arusha National Park, is considered an active volcano and is the country's second-highest mountain. It is also considered the fourth highest mountain in all of Africa by some (after Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, and the Rwenzoris – aka the Mountains of the Moon). 500,000+ years ago, Mount Meru erupted in a tremendous explosion that destroyed it's a cone shape and resulted in a horseshoe crater with the eastern side removed. The resulting mountain has its summit on the west side with its inner walls rising over 1,500m from the crater floor, making them among the tallest cliffs in Africa. In the past 100 years, eruptions have been reported as the Ash Cone continues to build inside the crater.
