Located at the heart of the Battles of the Somme (1914-1918), in a tunnel which was converted into an air-raid shelter in 1938, the Somme Trench Museum recreates the life of soldiers in the trenches of the July 1916 offensive, where the allies attacked the positions held by the Germans.

Starting in the pretty little town of Albert we head first to Villers-Bretonneux and spend the morning uncovering the history of the Australian force in the dark days of the 1918 German Spring Offensive. After lunch, we move on to the Battle of the Somme. From trenches to memorials we will guide you through the planning and execution of this infamous campaign. We only operate private tours, this will be your tour and adapted as necessary to meet your needs during the day. With our years of living and working on these iconic sites, we aim to ensure you leave with memories of the sacrifice of a generation. Given suitable notice time and the availability of records we are able to research and prepare a bespoke tour to cover an individual soldier or unit.

During this 6-hour tour, your guide will take you through the different stages of the Battle of the Somme; looking at the strategic aspect, its consequences, the human cost, the impact of the war on people and landscape, and much more! This is a living history visit of events that took place in the 20th century There is so much preserved here, that we could imagine that these battles happened yesterday. There is nothing "tacky" here. There is a tremendous sense of honour and respect. On certain days there is a nearby steam railway, constructed to carry troops and war materials during the First World War. The circuit of remembrance is in beautiful, rural countryside. There are specific circuits, depending on your nationality. Villers-Bretonneux has four Australian sites to visit, Your guide has lived and worked on The Somme for a little over 30 years. Other additional visits possible: micro breweries, steam railways, gardens.

During these 4 hours of visit you will discover why the "Battle of the Somme" remains for the British the worst battle of their history. Your guide will tell you about the course of the battle, the reasons it took place, the results, but also the consequences of this war on soldiers, civilians, the landscape and the people of today. Our guide, Michael Smith, has lived and worked on The Somme since 1991 The is a comprehensive circuit of the Somme battlefields of 1916 The itinerary can be tailored to reflect your nationality If you have ancestors who fell during these battles, the cemetery and/or monument will be included. Our circuit takes us through beautiful countryside Other attractions can be added in the region: steam heritage railway, Amiens cathedral (the largest in France), windmills, a micro brewery.

This is a tailor-made tour. Before the date of your tour, your guide will research your relative(s) and take you to the relevant sites on the day. This could include the battlefields of Bullecourt, Poziere, Dernancourt, Le Hamel, Villers-Bretonneux, etc.. or indeed anywhere in the counties of Somme or Pas-de-Calais and in the fields! All you have to do is to give the details of your relative a month before the date of your visit.
