Tosa Washi

We offer a hands-on workshop where you can experience handmade washi, a traditional Japanese craft. Tosa Washi, with over 1,000 years of history, is one of Japan’s top three washi papers. Known for its strength and warmth, it’s easy to try and makes for a memorable Asakusa experience—perfect for fans of crafts or Japanese culture. After a short video on Tosa Washi’s history and process, you’ll wear traditional workwear (samue) and make washi postcards with help from a friendly instructor. In both the Plain Paper Plan and Colored Paper Plan, you’ll handcraft four plain postcards. The Colored Paper Plan includes an extra step: layering beautiful Rakusuishi—lace-like decorative washi—on top. You can choose your favorite four colors. The workshop is full of smiles and surprise at the beauty of the finished paper. Take home your handmade washi as a special souvenir.

This premium plan involves hand-making the gorgeous and beautiful "Unryu paper" with a pattern resembling a dragon dancing among the clouds, pouring it into a special mold to make two envelopes and four pieces of letter paper. Unryu paper is characterized by its unique pattern created by adding the long, thin fibers of Tosa kozo, and the warmth and luxury that only natural fibers can give it. The "Unryu Paper" that will be produced in this plan was created during the Meiji and Taisho periods, when writing implements changed from brushes to pens and the uses of washi paper, which had previously been a daily necessity, expanded. By incorporating long, thin torn fibers, a pattern that resembles a dragon dancing among the clouds is created. It has a unique, elegant, luxurious feel and is highly regarded for its various uses, from interior decoration to wrapping paper and materials for traditional crafts.
