We will pick you up from your hotel and embark on a 2 and a half hour drive through Costa Rica´s majestic landscapes.

Once we arrive to La Fortuna we will enjoy a delicious lunch then start our adventure to the caverns where we will go through a 2 and a half hour exploration of the caverns. The Venado Caverns are located about 3 km east of the town of Venado and 45 minutes from La Fortuna. It is ideal for those who have an adventurous spirit since we will definitely get muddy walking and crawling through 4 caves that pathways are narrow. The tour will conclude with a warm and relaxing thermal bathe in the hot springs of the Arenal volcano.

Some history points about the Venado Caverns.

The Vendado Caverns were formed approximately about 3 million years ago, they are located upon a tectonic plate fault. There are unique water currents, ecosystems and rock formations in the caves dating back hundreds of thousands of years. Even though the natives were aware of the caverns existence they were not formally explored until the 1960´s by a Mr. Robert Vergenes who was a French explorer. These caverns are home to different species like spiders, crabs, insects and fish, even though the tectonic movement provoked the rising of the caverns only 10 of the 450 are accesible.

Inside the caverns.

As you travel through the narrow pathways you will notice they are humid and dark which are not ideal for toddlers, disabled people or anyone who suffers from claustrofobia. Fast drying attire is essential considering the wet and humid environment along with the dripping water from the limestone and the river which runs through the caverns.

Species within the caverns

A species that is suspected to have been living in the caverns for hundreds of years are bats, there are thousands of them hanging from the ceiling. You will also see spiders which have adapted to the the darkness and humid atmosphere. In addition, there are marine fossils that can be easily detected and you may also see some monochromatic fish and frogs.

Hot springs

The trip to the hot springs is to close out the day and unwind by soaking in hot waters to help loosen up muscles and enjoy the temperature and steam from the thermal waters of the Arenal volcano. The waters are filled with high minerals content which is good for therapeutic and medical uses.
